Zebra Fans

(Two underwater images of Zebra Lionfish.) Probably my favorite lionfish in the Lembeh Strait was the small zebra lionfish. Shades of red, salmon-pink, and orange are striped with white and the fish’s fins are webbed, with spines that do not protrude very far. The overall effect is a beautiful, brightly colored orange and red fan near the dull, black sand bottom. It is often seen holding station or slowly crawling along the bottom using the hooked spines on the bottom of its fins.

Orange Skunk

(Underwater photo of a pair of orange skunk anemonefish.) I love anemonefish. These orange skunk anemonefish were the brightest, cleanest color I’d seen. Their home, a brown anemone, really offset and complimented the color of the fish.

Rice and Fish

(Two photos: rice and smoked fish for sale in the Aertembaga Market in Bitung, North Sulawesi, Indonesia.) I was impressed the number of superficially identical varieties of rice for sale. There were also a number of stands selling fish; One had a pile of different fish piled on a newspaper-covered table.

Grocery Shopping

Candid photos from Aertembaga Market, in Bitung (North Sulawesi, Indonesia): A visit to the Aertembaga Market in Bitung is not to be missed. A young man in one stand dared Nancy to take his elder’s photo; the old man was diffident … until Nancy showed him the photo. Then everyone lit up, all smiles.

Fish for Dinner

(Photos from the fish market at Bitung.) The fish market in Bitung (on the Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia) comes to life just after dawn. Fishermen, cooks, staff from local hotels and resorts along the Lembeh Strait, and ordinary husbands and housewives come together in a boisterous throng in the large open-air market facility next to the waters of the Lembeh Strait.
